This is defnitely not your bargain basement special, not a cheap price, but then again, what is your hearing really worth to you? We gave up the need for ear protection when we bought this vacuum. If the power nozzle is not turned on, you can barely hear it, quieter than most hairdryers. Even with the agitation bar on in the power nozzle, still very quiet, just a little more noticable. Consumer Reports listed it as superior in quiet factor, above others. How does it clean? We have been very happy with it’s ability to really get to the embeddded dust you find in carpets and rugs, even with just suction and no agitation. The bare floor cleaner does a nice job, too. It’s light enough that you won’t find yourself in traction if you need to carry it upstairs. Speaking of traction, one of the handiest features of this vaccum is the slot to “park” the power nozzle or bare floor cleaner extentions, so that they stand upright when you need to leave the vacuum for a few minutes, or for general storage. No longer are there near misses in tripping over the thoses hoses when come back from answering the phone etc. The tools are easily stored in a compartment that is above the bag and filters, easily accessible and easy to use. I find that what goes into this vacuum stays there, no returning dust blowing at you, even when the bag is getting quite full. I like the idea of having a bagless vacuum, but truthfully, there is really something to be said for just chucking out the bag and all the mess along with it. The bags do seem to help boost filtration quite a bit and they are indeed some of the thickest bags you have ever seen for a vacuum. They really do look the quality that they are. Overall, I would have to say, this is a good buy in a vacuum and you won’t go wrong in purchasing it. Consumer Reports and recommendations from friends rarely steer us wrong, and certainly we can say that we guided to a good, solid purchase that will meet our needs for a long time to come.

Miele S514 Electro Mango Red W/217 Elec. Power Nozzle Review

What’s not to like about a 0 vacuum cleaner other than the price? Being a guy and not knowing a lot about vacuums I figured a good one is going to cost a few bucks. I have lived in Germany for many years and know that the Germans don’t build crap; and the Miele is no exception even if it is assembled in China of German parts. Their way of keeping the costs reasonable I guess. After doing my research on the internet and visiting a local Miele distributor I decided on the S514 as a good middle of the road compromise. Having expensive oriental carpets I needed something with a little more suction power and a powered beater bar. First thing I did when I got it assembled was to crank it all the way to max and proceed to vacuum the carpets. This thing actually lifted the carpets off the floor so I had to turn down the power a bit and that’s when I noticed there was a setting for the beater bar. Typical guy, when all else fails read the instructions. The beater bar isn’t too rough on my carpets and does a good job of raising the nap without damaging the fibers. The only reason I don’t give it a 5 star rating is because of the lack of a proper flat floor brush. The power beater bar, even when powered off, doesn’t do well on flat, bare floors. I just figure that for the price I paid they could have provided a better floor brush. What would it cost them, a couple of bucks extra? But because I had to pay an additional for a flat brush the Miele S514 doesn’t get a top rating.
